The Millennium Development Goals are goals that all 191 UN member nations agreed to achieve by 2015. Eight goals were specified:

·                Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

·                Achieve universal primary education

·                Promote gender equality and empower women

·                Reduce child mortality

·                Improve maternal health

·                Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases

·                Ensure environmental sustainability

·                Develop a global partnership for development

Use IFs to further analyze how different countries are achieving these important goals.

The Main Menu of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) provides you with four scroll down bars that fall at the top of the screen underneath the Main Menu options. On the left, you can toggle between the different goals. Scroll down to Child Mortality. The next scroll down menu allows you to select from different targets. For Child Mortality, there is only one target and it is explained in the box below the menu. The next scroll down menu explains what indicator you are using in this specific example. This particular indicator is also explained in the box directly beneath the scroll down menu.

When you choose one of the goals, a bar graph is displayed showing historical data for a certain variables. For the image above, Bangladeshalleviation of Extreme Poverty and Hunger is shown. In this version of IFs, the green line represents the MDG goal path. The red line represents actual data collected about the variable and the purple line then projects that growth into the future. At the top right of the screen you can see a box concludes that Bangladeshprogress in the reduction of Extreme Poverty and Hunger has been No Progress. This box will change from country to country depending on whether they are improving at the rate of the MGD goal path.

On your own, try to compare different countries in a region to see how well they are improving the goals explicated in the Millennium Development Goals. For example, look at how Iran, Iraq and Pakistan are all successfully, or not so successfully, achieving these goals.
