The causal driver tracing window is reached from the Driver option that is available on several pop-up menus that provide help during use of IFs.
The mechanism behind this tracing parses the computer code and looks for the variables and parameters that are used in the computation of a variable (the drivers of it) and for the variables that it, in turn, effects. The parsing system was developed by Mohammod T. Irfan. The initial variable at the middle of the diagram is the one for which the diagram is called up. Floating the mouse tip over the abbreviated names of variables and parameters will call up the full names.
A double-click on a driver of the variable in the center of the diagram or on one of the variables driven by it will cause the diagram to be re-centered on the variable selected, showing both its drivers and what is driven by it. This process allows the user of IFs to do a quick tracing back of causality for results discovered. At any time the Start Over menu option will re-center on the variable initially chosen.
The obvious limitation of causal driver tracing is that it does not show exact equation forms or the computer code. But the Options menu item contains sub-options that will do that for the variable at the middle of the diagram. In short, this window offers a multiplicity of views into the actual structure behind any selected variable. It is a powerful force for transparency and openness.
