Creating PPHP Reference Tables

To create Pardee Center Patterns of Potential Human Progress (PPHP) reference tables (the ones found at the back sections of PPHP volumes), follow these steps.

First, open Display, then Flex Packaged Display. From this page, choose the HD Multivariate Report Category. This brings up a list of different kinds of HD reports that we can use for our display purposes. For this example, choose the HD Multivariate Report Education 12, or similar.

We now need to specify a way to organize our geography. To do this, choose Grouping Options, then Using G-Lists. Scroll down the Dimensions box (on the far right) and choose Pardee.

Next, as we are interested in creating tables, choose the Table button at the bottom left of this display screen. This will take a moment to populate the table. When finished, our standard table display will appear.

From here, we need to further decompose this table to produce a product that mimics the format of the PPHP volume tables. To do that, choose Save, then Format Options. A new menu appears. Make sure the Pardee Format box is ticked. At the top left, choose the kid of file that you would like to produce. Below that, there are some clear formatting options. Below that, we need to choose the display years for our table. If the year is 2010, and this is for a PPHP volume with a time horizon of 50 years, we can adjust the first and last year accordingly.

In the middle column, the Global Ordering category toggles the output between country focused displays, or variable focused displays. For our volume tables, choose the Countries within Variables. Typically, the sequence order of the output is done alphabetically, but you can choose to change the list organization to the size of the output variable. The final option in the middle column allows you to tell the model whether the list you are displaying is for a single variable or multiple variables. The PPHP table requires multiple variables.

On the far right, the specific variables displayed are further refined. At the top, you can choose to display only a specific variable, but the PPHP volumes display all variables in the HG Multivariate Report list. The next default setting-to omit non display years-is also the standard PPHP approach to producing the end-volume tables. You can choose to make page breaks in your file along category lines, but this is not necessary for the PPHP output. Next, and importantly, make sure to add the correct years to display: if you have a 50 year time horizon, and want three output years, choose to add 2035 by adding it in the box and hitting enter. At the bottom, you can tick the printable version, which further formats the table.

Click "Continue" at the top of this screen, when finished.

Next, click Save, then Transpose and Decompose, then All Years. After you check this, a screen will appear that asks where you would like to save the document. Choose a place that you will remember. Click OK.

A status bar will now appear. The production of these lists takes quite a bit of time, so be patient!
