Duplicate Map IDs

As discussed in the section on Running Map ID Reports, a source of errors in connecting a feature in the IFs program to the corresponding help topic is duplicate map IDs. While the existence of duplicate map IDs does not mean that the link between the feature and the help topic is broken, looking for them is a good first step in diagnosing why a given link is not working.

Examine the above picture closely. The duplicated map IDs are distributed between two locations: the .hh file in which the topic is located, and Lessons Standalone.hh. The Lessons Standalone.hh file contains a series that begins with 13. As the Robohelp program will treat whichever map ID that is listed first in the list as the dominant, the existence of alternate map IDs in the Lessons .hh file is a potential source of errors.

There are two ways of treating this issue. One is simply to delete the alternate map IDs in the Lessons .hh file. The second is to stop the Lessons .hh file from automatically generating new map IDs for new help topics. To accomplish the first solution, simply open the Lessons Standalone .hh file and begin deleting map IDs. How does one accomplish the second?

First, go into the File option on the heading of the Robohelp program. Next, select Project Settings. On the left side of the dialogue that appears is the list of word documents that contain the help topics for the IFs program. Unselect the box for Lessons Standalone.doc. The Robohelp program should no longer generate new map IDs for help topics located in other word documents. However, in case the user creates a new help topic in the Lessons Standalone document, the map ID will need to be generated manually by the user.
