The United Nations Population Division generously provided the core of the population model data, the cohort-specific values by country for age/sex, fertility, and mortality. The model uses the 1998 UN population data revision. That data did not, however, provide information for Taiwan (we used the distributions of South Korea).
The following data were taken from the most recent year of the WDI time series, often using the CD-ROM source of data (e.g. 1998, 1999):
POP. Population, total. We used 1995 when possible and 1994 when it could fill holes. The World Bank reported population in individuals and we divided by one million to convert to million people.
Population. Time series for population, total. Provided by the CIA through their SAG web site.
TFR. Fertility rate, total (births per woman). We used 1995 when possible, 1994 to fill in some of the holes and 1992 data to fill in the rest of the holes (1994 data were much less complete that 1995).
TFR. Time series for fertility rate, total (births per woman). WDI, selected years.
Contruse. Contraceptive prevalence rate (% of women 15-49, 1989-95). We used the Population Dynamics table from the WDI table (not time series data), to gather this data. Also used 1992 data to fill in the holes.
Contruse%. Time series for contraceptive prevalence rate (% of women 15-49). We found data from The Evaluation Project of the Population Reference Bureau to be superior to those of WDI.
CBR. Birth rate, crude (per 1000 people). We used 1995 when possible, 1994 to fill in some of the holes, and 1992 to fill in the rest of the holes (1994 was much less complete than 1995).
CDR. Birth rate, crude (per 1000 people). We used 1995 when possible, 1994 to fill in some of the holes, and 1992 to fill in the rest of the holes (1994 was much less complete than 1995).
Labor. Labor force, total, divided by a million. We divided this by total population to obtain LAPOPR, the labor force participation rate. We used 1995 data when possible, 1994 and 1992 to fill in the holes.
Illiteracy. Illiteracy rate, adult total (% of people 15+). We used 1995 data when possible, 1994 and 1992 to fill in the holes (1994 was much less complete than 1995).
Illiteracy%. Time series for illiteracy rate, adult total (% of people 15+). Selected years from WDI. We used assorted values from 1960-1965 to create an estimate for large numbers of countries in 1963.
Illiteracy, female. Illiteracy rate, adult female (% of females 15+). We used 1995 when possible, and 1994 when it could fill holes (1994 data were much less complete than 1995).
LIT. Literacy not available in World Bank data. Compute from illiteracy (100-%).
CLPC. Calories per capita (daily). It proved difficult to find a source for daily calories available per capita. The World Bank CD-ROM does not have that series. The UN Statistical Yearbook CD-ROM (copyright 1996) includes the series, but only through 1990. Similarly, the World Resources Institute 1996-97 Database Diskette includes data on calories only through 1990 (and does not include precisely this series). Data taken from the 1996 UNDPHuman Development Report. Report uses 1992 data. Also used data from 1992 database to fill in the holes. Data were not available in the “FAOSTAT Statistics Database.”
InfMor. Mortality rate, infant (per 1,000 live births). We used 1995 data when possible, and 1994 and 1992 data when it could fill holes (1994 was much less complete than 1995).
InfMort. Time series for mortality rate, infant (per 1,000 live births). Selected years from WDI.
LifExp. Life expectancy at birth, total (years). We used 1995 when possible, and 1994 and 1992 to fill holes (1994 was much less complete than 1995).
LifExpect. Time series for life expectancy at birth, total (years). Selected years from WDI.
Malemigr. We used data from the UN, Replacement Migration (2000) for age-sex information on migrants. They used data on the structure of migrants into the United States, Canada, and Australia, the three major traditional countries of migration, to develop a model pattern for immigrants.
Urban. Urban population (% of total). We used 1995 when possible, 1994 and 1992 to fill in holes.
UrbanGr. Urban population growth (% annually). We used 1995 when possible, and 1994 and 1992 when it could fill holes.
MALNCHP. Child malnutrition (% underweight 1989-95). We used the People Table of the World Bank Atlas file for this table. Also used 1992 data to fill in the holes.
MalnChil%. Time series for child malnutriution (% underweight). FAO data from their web site.
